Attending a retreat at Pieceful Cottage in Deal Island, MD is your chance to enjoy a truly relaxing get-a-way and a view of the most stunning sunsets over the Chesapeake Bay.
Qualified quilt teacher, Betty Dietz has been quilting and teaching for over 20 years and leads workshops designed for every quilter from beginner to advanced. Projects range from simple mystery quilts to the more complicated drafting and stitching of circular flying geese. The cottage has comfortable accommodations for six quilters, so gather a group of friends for a girl’s weekend away.
Do you own EQ? Get away from it all with an Electric Quilt Escape© at Pieceful Cottage in Wenona, MD. Plan a get-together to meet your on-line friends, or bring your bee and your laptops loaded with any version of EQ. Betty also offers private lessons for EQ and quilt design services.

Off Season – $150.00/night with a two night minimum or $850.00/week.
High Season – Memorial Day to Labor Day – $1250/Week . Only week-long retreats are available in High Season. A week is Saturday to Saturday.

Learn to Quilt – Retreat Workshops
Designed for new quilters or quilters looking for a refresher class. Choose one or more of these one hour workshops for your retreat.
Learn to Piece by Machine – Learn proper techniques for rotary cutting, practice machine piecing with an exact 1/4″ seam and get some great pressing tips.
Learn to Applique by Machine – Learn three different ways to apply fabric-to-fabric with your machine and some fusible web. Easy and fun!
Learn to Quilt by Machine - Learn to mark & baste a quilt top and then quilt by machine. Also, try out some free-hand quilting. Lots of Fun!
Learn to Bind by Machine – a one hour workshop where you will learn how to cut bias binding, and attach it to your quilt by machine.
Learn to Paper Piece by Machine - Learn traditional paper-piecing while you create your own small quilt top. Select from a number of projects all of which can be completed in a day.

Bits ‘n’ Strips – Workshops and Pattern Series
Want to use up your stash? This workshop shows you how easy it is to cut your leftover fabrics into 5″ bits and 2 1/2″ strips. There are many easy (beginner level) quilts that you can make from this combination of fabric scraps. You can choose to make the “In the Vineyard” quilt or any of the other quilts from my Bits ‘n’ Strips pattern series. The possibilities are endless!

The Fine Art of Machine Appliqué
The “Patches and Posies” Quilt is easily created using fusible web and machine appliqué. Learn this easy technique while mastering the buttonhole stitch, a stitch available on most of today’s newer sewing machines.

Freezer paper comes to the rescue, to help create machine appliquéd circles on squares.
Cut them apart, sew back together and voila! Drunkard’s Path blocks.

You will learn an easy non-traditional “Paper Piecing” technique for making curved arcs. Make precise seams just as in traditional paper piecing, but you will not have all the paper to tear out.

Everlasting Hearts
This brightly colored twin size quilt is great fun to make.
You can choose to use hand or machine buttonhole stitches around the fused hearts.
Then add log cabin-styled borders to set off each block against a bold black print sashing.
When done as a workshop, you’ll be able to swap fabrics with your friends.

Virginia Cardinal & the Virginia Quilt
Hand appliqué is so easy once you learn the secrets.
This fine wall hanging started out as a Block-of-the-Month for the Fairfax QU qith an original design by Betty Dietz
The center appliqué block can be finished into a small wall hanging,
or the eight Virginia Blocks can be added to the borders for a larger quilt.

Choose a large print fabric, combine it with three or four other fabrics to make this stunning two block quilt.
I made mine to use as a beach quilt, but yours could go on a bed for a teen or be used as a cuddle blanket.
The blocks are rotary cut for a fast easy quilt.

Learn the secrets for making your own Tessellated Leaves.
A tessellation happens when a single shape is repeated and interlocked in such a way that there are no spaces between the shapes.
Although it looks complicated, following the easy steps for planning this quilt will make it a breeze to sew together.
You will be happy with your results and proud of your finished project.
This quilt is adapted from a pattern by Jackie Robinson. The original block was published in 1925.

Using two simple blocks, and three fabrics this quilt goes together in a snap.
The class sample is made up in turquoise and ruby red on a gold background.
But whatever colors you choose, your finished quilt will be a beautiful surprise.

EQ For Beginners
Do you own EQ6, but never use it? Take a short three-hour class with a hands-on tutorial. You will quickly be designing your own quilts at home. This class also works for owners of earlier versions of Electric Quilt.
More fun with Electric Quilts
In this class you can learn more advanced design applications, appliqué, how to work with paper piecing patterns, and how to overlay quilt designs. Must have taken Beginners class or have equivalent knowledge of EQ5/EQ6
